- "Lockdown Treatment" an Escape Room to Enhance Interprofessional Collaboration in Healthcare
- Summary
- Objectives: This study aimed to describe the stages of design, development, and evaluation of a virtual escape room, entitled Lockdown Treatment, developed to enhance interprofessional collaboration among healthcare professionals. Methods: A User-Centered Design methodology was adopted, involving end-users throughout all stages of the process, from requirements elicitation to iterative prototyping. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with healthcare professionals to identify needs and define the functional and pedagogical requirements of the game. Based on these findings, a prototype was developed and subsequently tested with end-users to assess usability and educational effectiveness. Results: In the initial phase, six healthcare professionals from different disciplines contributed to the definition of the key design requirements. Based on these inputs, the Lockdown Treatment escape room prototype was developed, incorporating puzzles inspired by real-world clinical challenges and gamification elements designed to foster the development of collaborative competencies such as communication, flexibility, and leadership. During the prototype testing phase, another group of six healthcare professionals participated in the usability and performance evaluation. The findings indicated that, although the game effectively promoted interprofessional collaboration, improvements were needed regarding usability and the inclusion of additional interactive features. Conclusion: Despite the identified need for refinements, this study provides a solid foundation for future research on the use of escape rooms as educational tools to strengthen interprofessional collaboration skills in healthcare settings.
