As a scientist, Karien has worked in scientific research for 25 years, starting with searching for the gene for Huntington’s disease while later on she was involved in molecular biology of bone development and tumor imaging. Her scientific expertise ranges from DNA technology, genetics, molecular and cellular biology, stem cell biology, regenerative medicine and medical biotechnology.
Currently, she is working as programme officer at The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development for Translational Research programs (ZonMw). In addition, she is a freelance project manager, presently working for the Forum Biotechnology and Genetics and for the Lymph&Co Foundation. At Lymph&Co Karien supports the Scientific Advisory Board in preparing calls for research proposals, review and selection of submitted research proposals for funding and monitoring of funded projects.
WORKSHOP GAMING FOR LYMPHOMA 2019
Designing UNMASK a citizen science game for the development of a vaccine against Lymphoma
Lypmphoma is amongst the deadliest cancers. Scientists have discovered about 10.000 DNA structures which could detect the evil cells and make them immune. It would take researchers about 10 years to specify the unique DNA structure to UNMASK the lymph cancer cells. With a citizen science game this research will speed up this proces significantly.
In this workshop the first concepts of a citizen science game will be designed in cooperation between researchers and game designers. As a scientist and member of the Advisory Board of Lymph & Co Karien will lead this workshop.
