EMERGE – A Virtual 3D Emergency Room

Medical students are in theory well educated and trained to treat patients. However, many of the required skills to work in an emergency room, like time and patient management in a stressful environment cannot be taught through traditional means. To address this issue, PatientZero Games, the Medical Center Göttingen and the Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf developed a 3D serious game called EMERGE.

EMERGE simulates a real world 3D emergency room, which will be used to train certain scenarios that occur in real life emergency rooms, but are hard to teach in standard medical classes. For example, during class students only handle one case at a time, whereas in the emergency room they need to be able to deal with multiple cases simultaneously. Common medical e-learning software mostly uses text-based user interfaces, which are useable for a linear learning experience that focuses only on medical know-how, but fail to reproduce the stress and multitasking factors that are encountered in real emergency rooms. EMERGE provides a learning environment that is more suited to impart complex knowledge, train multitasking, and is also more fun and visually appealing than comparable e-learning software.
